I am so my father's daughter

Today I went to lunch at an Indian restaurant near my house with my friend Laura.
Not only have I spent a long time working in restaurants and can pick up on things about the people in them somewhat quickly (like anticipating when a guest would need more water or be ready to pay before being asked); but my father also taught me how to notice random things about my surroundings.

For instance:
  • When we walked in there were 2-3 tables in use, at least one was a business lunch and I'd say a contract was involved, probably an artist-photographer or graphic designer because there was a portfolio of some sort there.
  • One of the tables that came in after us, a one-top--meaning one person table, is probably a regular judging on the way the server interacted with her and the time it took her to decide on what she wanted to get.
  • Even though the restaurant is owned and run by Indians, the hostess and one of the chefs was probably Hispanic.
  • The other host/server and chef own or run the place, they had better pronunciations of the dishes and are related--brothers or cousins from resemblance and skin tone also the way they interacted.
  • The brothers are comfortable working together but the rest of the staff is new-ish and the brothers are still getting used to the delegation of responsibility.
  • It was slow right before we got there because I could see facebook account open on the computer by the front desk through a reflection on the mirror by where we were sitting.
  • The restaurant charges way too much for their young coconut water considering how they got it from cans of coconut water you can buy from any specialty or health food store for a fraction of the price (I saw the cans in the back when one of the employees moved the curtain) but their main dishes are delightful and will return again.
I should stop watching spy movies
or crime shows that are solved on largely circumstantial evidence
and probably become a special agent or something
no, that would be nuts.

Also tonight I get to meet the author of The Makers Diet and Patent Heal Thyself and owner of the Garden of Life company, a big shot in the healthfoodie world. I normally don't get star-struck, even when I would get to see General Authorities around Thanksgiving Pt or celebs around the film festival during Sundance days, but I'm pretty excited to go to this training.
