What do do when you get sports balm in your eye

Tiger Balm, Cayenne Deep Heat, Bengay
I love this stuff, but sometimes I get it in my eye.
I swear I'm not the only one who does this.

Good news?
There's hope.
Oil.
Not water.
Cue the Incubus song.

The best way to relieve that minty pain and get the stuff away from your eye?
Oil.  Specifically, coconut oil.
I use coconut oil because it's what I already have on hand for makeup removal but you could use just about any oil that you can stand having so close to your eye.

The same makeup-removal rules apply:
  • Take a Q-tip and saturate it in oil

  •  Trace along the outside of your eye (don't go in your eye--Gross)
  • Wipe off excess with a cotton ball

Why does coconut oil work?
Most sports rubs have wintergreen and peppermint oils in them--that's where the cooling feeling comes from.
These essential oils are fat soluble which means fat transports them, or, carries them away where water doesn't.
When you try to wash your eye with water after getting sports balm in there you're not helping yourself. In fact you're probably making it worse.
Use the oil.
You're welcome.
